E.ON helps Dartmoor nature centre go green with biomass boiler Leading energy company E.ON has given a £7,000 grant under itsSOURCE community initiative towards the cost of installing a woodpellet boiler at The Pengelly Centre, which is situated on the edgeof a disused limestone quarry within Dartmoor National Park.
The site is a special area of conservation as it houses the largestcolony of greater horseshoe bats in the UK, as well as a listedgroup of 100,000 year-old mammal bones. The centre is used foreducational purposes by researchers and cavers, and is operated bythe William Pengelly Cave Studies Trust.

The Trust was formed in 1962, with the aim of supporting andconducting cave studies through education programmes, includingsubjects in geology, palaeontology, climate change and wildlife. Its members include the Devon Wildlife Trust, Dartmoor NationalPark, Natural England, the Bat Conservation Trust and DevonAdventure Training.
The cash will be used to replace the existing energy inefficientLPG boiler system with the wood pellet system, which will provideboth heating and hot water for the centre.
Tony Jenkin Jones, Community Relations Executive with E.ON, said:"We're delighted to be able to contribute towards this excitingproject for The William Pengelly Cave Studies Trust as part of ourSOURCE scheme, which is designed to help community groups get theirsustainable energy projects off the ground.
"They're looking to replace their existing energy inefficientheating system, to minimise their impact on the environment, and tomake significant cost savings."
It is expected that the wood pellet boiler will save the emissionof over seven tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, as well assignificant savings for the Trust by reducing fuel bills by up to50 per cent.
Sheila Phillips, from the Pengelly Trust, said: "We are so gratefulto E.ON for helping to fund our new green heating system, whichwill further our commitment to worldwide conservation andprotection of our fragile environment.
"The site at Buckfastleigh provides clear evidence of climatechange over the past 100,000 years and the effects this has on thenatural world.''
E.ON, one of the UK's leading green electricity generators, launched its SOURCE fund in 2007 to help with the costs ofsustainable energy projects for community buildings.
The fund is backed up by the SOURCE website, which providesinformation and advice for community groups seeking to become moreenergy efficient or generate their own energy from sustainablesources.
The website, which contains full details of how to apply for agrant, can be accessed at www.eon-uk.com/source.
The next deadline for applications for funding is Friday 3 October,2008.

We also burnbiomass material mixed with coal in two of our power stations andhave recently opened the UK's largest dedicated biomass powerstation at Lockerbie. Combined, our renewable portfolio generatesenough green energy to power the homes in a city the size ofManchester; Our target is to cut the carbon released by each kW of electricitywe generate by 10% between 2005-2012, having already reduced it by20% since 1990; We have 1,300MW of renewable capacity under development; We invested £53 million in energy efficiency in 2006. Thesemeasures included loft and cavity wall insulation, installation ofenergy efficient boilers and smart metering, a technology we areinvesting a further £12 million in over the next two years.
