Bomba's Beehive & Carving Industry Strengthened

The Ministry of Economic Development, Commerce, Industry andConsumer Protection this afternoon will officially hand over 13 beehives, equipment and supplies to 14 families in Bomba Village,Belize District for a Beekeeping and Carving Project.

The total funds approved for this project are BZ$25,000.00 which isa grant by the European Union under the Belize Rural DevelopmentProgram. This project is being implemented by the Social InvestmentFund on behalf of the Government of Belize under the Hurricane DeanEmergency Reconstruction Project.

The project has two components that offer great opportunity forenterprise development in this region, namely the production ofhoney and carved souvenirs for the tourist industry. A total of 14low income families in the area affected by Hurricane Dean areparticipating in the project, and they expect that the investmentin the bee hives, appropriate equipment and supplies, and thetraining their families will receive in production and marketingwill enable them to produce the quantity and quality of productsthat the tourist and the public in general will appreciate, as wellas improve their livelihoods.

Present at this handing over ceremony will be the Hon. EdmondCastro Minister of State in the Ministry of Works and AreaRepresentative for Belize Rural North, Mr. Gary Ramirez, ActingDistrict Agriculture Coordinator in Belize District, Mr. AssadMagaña, Officer of the Belize Rural Development Program andMr. Oscar Alonzo Executive Director for the Social Investment Fund.
