economy that is driving down demand for information technologyproducts, a market watcher predicted yesterday.
In the first quarter of the year, PC monitor output in Taiwandropped to 324,829 units, a decline of 14.8 percent from lastyear's fourth quarter and a 2.2 percent drop year-on-year,according to a recent report by market researcher InternationalData Corporation (IDC).
The decline however began in the last quarter of 2007, when themarket output of 455,517 units fell by 7 percent quarterly and 8percent annually, the report indicated.
According to a market watcher, this decline is due mainly to theincreasing popularity of notebooks, which do not require separatemonitors.
"It is estimated that by this year's fourth quarter, over 50percent of global computer buyers would be looking fornotebooks," said Simon Yang, vice president of the local thinktank Topology Research Institute.
Also, Yang told the CNA Sunday, compared with the last twoquarters, a smaller number of buyers are replacing their cathoderay tube (CRT) monitors with liquid crystal display (LCD) screens.
This is because most users who wanted to switch to LCD monitorsalready did so in 2007 when LCD monitors were hot on the market, heexplained.
Nonetheless, he expressed a positive outlook for 2008, saying thatlarge PC monitors could take up part of the monitor market.
