Backup generator fails at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

ATLANTA (AP)- A backup generator system at the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention failed and left four buildings, includingone that houses a deadly strain of avian flu, without power formore than an hour.
The incident Friday was the latest in a series of mechanical andconstruction problems at the agency's Clifton Road campus.
The outage affected air flow systems in labs that contains germs
such as the H5N1 flu virus, a deadly strain of avian flu that some
experts think could cause a pandemic. But CDC spokesman Tom Skinner
told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that neither center employeesnor the public were at risk of exposure to infectious agents.
