The folks in UC San Diego were in for a big surprise this week whenthe California Institute for Telecommunications and InformationTechnology (Calit2) unveiled something it had been working on, thehighest-resolution display system for scientific visualisation inthe world.
The display called Highly Interactive Parallelized Display Space(or HIPer for short) consists of an unbelievable 287 million pixelsof screen res and is claimed to be 10 per cent bigger than thehyperwall-2, a NASA-built system that used to be the biggest in theworld.
The display is constructed from 70 high-resolution Dell 30-inchdisplays, arranged in fourteen columns of five displays. Eachdisplay consists of 2,560 by 1,600 pixels, totalling a massive35,640 by 8,000 pixels.
Big ideas
Speaking about the giant TV, Falko Kuester, principal investigatorof the HIPerSpace system, said: "By using larger, high-resolutiontiles, we also have minimised the amount of space taken up by theframes, or bezels, of each display.
"Bezels will eventually disappear, but until then, we can reducetheir distraction by keeping the highest possible ratio of screenarea to each tile's bezel."
Size-wise, the screen measures 9.7 metres x 2.3 metres (or 31.8feet wide and 7.5 feet tall in old money).
And what are they displaying on the, er, display. Well, it'scertainly not re-runs of Hollyoaks , more footage from the National Geographic and the like. Big tigers and lions all round then.
