Don't try to flag down Doc Brown or Marty McFly if you happen tosee a silver DeLorean rolling through the downtown Grand Rapidsstreets this fall.
But, yes, that will be the very same plutonium-chugging,1.21-gigawatt-producing, time-traveling DeLorean that tore throughHill Valley on the big screen.
"It's the actual DeLorean that appeared in 'Back To The Future II,'" Fireball Run director Jay Sanchez said. "It even has the fluxcapacitor. It's the most fantastic movie car ever made."
The DeLorean will be one of 65 exotic cars to hit town Oct. 3-4.
Fireball Run organizers have made Grand Rapids the final stop ofthe second annual transcontinental rally. The nine-day, 3,500-milecontest, which is by invitation only, will give competitors anopportunity to match wits, driving skills and machines on roadsacross the United States.
The event will come to a conclusion Oct. 4, with Mayor GeorgeHeartwell waving the checkered flag downtown at a finish line to bedetermined.
"I'm honored that Grand Rapids has been chosen as the finish line,"Heartwell said. "While I admit that I'm not a big race fan, this isa wonderful event for Grand Rapids and a chance for people to seesome phenomenal cars.
"It benefits Grand Rapids at many levels. The intent of theorganization is child welfare and finding lost children, and theirtrack record with this national event has been quite remarkable.
"And to have a national event like this culminating here, with allthe local and national media attention, is really cool for GrandRapids. It gives us a chance to take the limelight once again for anational sporting event and show what Grand Rapids is all about."
Fireball Run is working with the Child Rescue Network, and each carwill carry a poster of a missing child. Each participant willdistribute 1,000 flyers with that missing child's photo during thejourney. Sanchez reported that 13 of the 65 children featured lastyear have been rescued.
