Patented testers find electric faults

[2008-7-9]

Tag: Circuit Interrupter

Safety first – always the most important thing to keep in mind when working around electricity.

Great strides have been made to make electricity management in the home as safe as possible. Certainly, stricter building codes, circuit breakers, and ground fault circuit interrupter outlets (the ones used in bathrooms and other areas water might be present) contribute to a safer home. Some dangers, however, may still exist.

Dangerous ground or arc faults occur when a power wire comes into contact with some other grounded material, such as a mechanical ground wire, pipe or heating duct. According to this patent, these electrical faults are not detected by the circuit breaker. In addition, voltage spikes from a lightning strike in combination with these faults can damage the home’s electrical system.

This patent describes an electrical circuit testing device that detects these particular faults. The device includes arc fault and ground fault circuit interrupter testers. The arc fault circuit interrupter tester can be connected to the electrical circuit in question, whereas the ground fault circuit interrupter tester is connected to both hot and neutral wires. From that the circuit is tested to identify whether any arc fault or ground fault leakage exists. If such a fault is detected, its location can be determined and the problem fixed.
