Huayu Communications selects Alteras Zero-Power CPLDs for portablehandsets to be used during 2008 Summer Games (Top News, 02 Jul 2008 ) Altera Corporation has announced that Shenzhen Huayu CommunicationsTechnology Company Limited has selected MAX IIZ CPLDs for use inits new P1200 portable handsets. Chosen for their ability toquickly and securely implement new features and capabilities whileconsuming minimal power and board space, Alteras MAX IIZ CPLDsmanage several peripherals in the P1200 handsets, including a RadioFrequency Identification (RFID) reader, an Infrared DataAssociation (IRDA) sensor, a Bluetooth interface, and LED control. The P1200 handsets made their debut during the Hangzhou publictransportation systems bicycle project in May 2008, and in August, they will be used for ID identification, logistics, and publictransportation services for the Beijing Summer Games.

With the 2008 Olympics rapidly approaching, we were challengedwith getting our handsets to market quickly with unique featuresthat are not supported by off-the-shelf components, said Wang ShaoWei, vice president of engineering at Shenzhen Huayu CommunicationsTechnology Company Limited. Participating in the MAX IIZ earlyaccess program enabled us to leverage Alteras first zero-powerCPLDs as soon as they were released, and to meet our aggressiveschedule with a cost-effective solution that minimizes our powerconsumption and increases design security.

Leading-edge handset developers such as Huayu face the challenge ofquickly adding new product features demanded by their customers. The lengthy development cycles of full-custom ASICs and the lack offlexibility of ASSPs have limited developers ability to meet thischallenge. In addition, features based on off-the-shelf componentslike ASSPs are easily duplicated by other manufacturers, severelyreducing the benefits that handset developers enjoy when theydeliver first-to-market capabilities. The MAX IIZ family addressesthese concerns by delivering the lowest power consumption of anyCPLD in the market, the highest amount of user-customizable logicresources per board area and design security.
