There were dozens of green building products on display

Naturally, the exhibit hall showcased a plethora of green gadgets and innovations – the hallmark of this new green age is innovation, after all.

One device I had not previously encountered was the Medis 24-7 Power Pack, a fuel cell-based small electronics recharger device. The device is so new that the first batch was just manufactured to sell in February.
Once activated (snapping the box closed, essentially) it provides up to 30 hours of power (only on demand) using clean fuel cell technology. The device is then returned to the manufacturer for recharge/recycling.

There were dozens of green building products on display. My favorite green building products at the festival were the tankless water heater, SolarTubes, the 100 percent post consumer paper countertops and cutting boards, and the no-VOC paints.
Another innovation I discovered was the “Ahhnatural” chemical-free hot tub product that replaces chlorine with a packet of minerals and salts that lasts all year. Swimming pools can be treated with similar products. Non-chlorine treatments are much healthier for bathers and keep toxic chlorine out of our environment Battery Cell.

Many booths displayed green versions of traditional products: clothing made of organic cotton, bamboo and hemp; bags (handbags, messenger bags and backpacks) made out of hemp, reclaimed billboard vinyl, used bike inner tubes, recycled PET fabric and other atypical materials; shoes made from tires, natural rubber, organic cotton or hemp and non-toxic adhesives; beds made from organic cotton and natural rubber; and there was even a jewelry company that sells bling made from recycled gold.

The food exhibitors were endless – really! Organic energy bars and protein shakes, milk, crackers, coconut milk, chocolate (lots and lots of chocolate), coffee, tea and much, much more. Fortunately, most of it is also available here in Billings at the Good Earth Market or the several health food stores in town.
Well, not the vegan, agave-nectar sweetened organic peppermint truffles and fudge, unfortunately. That or the goodies at the
African /Middle Eastern food stand. Oh, or the vegan sundae stand, either …. Someday!
But there was still so much more – renewable energy, Green Media (magazines, especially, as well as the new “Planet Green” cable channel), socially responsible investing, transportation and travel (including Amtrak – our mode of transport to Seattle), organic agriculture, green building, eco-sensitive gardening, body, health and cleaning products (lots of them!), green office products and a large section devoted to kids’ green items, services, toys and games … and more. It was quite an event.

Every company with a display at the event had to pass an exacting screening process for environmental and social performance and practices. This is part of what makes an expo event like this so useful – no greenwashing allowed.
