Vishay Offers Solid Tantalum Chip Capacitor With 63V Rating &22µF Capacitance

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced that it has extended its TANTAMOUNT® Hi-Rel COTS T97series to offer what it describes as the industry’s firstsolid tantalum chip capacitor with a 63V rating to meet deratingrequirements in +28V power supply designs.
According to the company, lacking alternatives for +28Vapplications, until now designers have been forced to rely on 50Vtantalum capacitors, which are unable to meet derating requirements(both military and best-commercial-practices) of 50% of the ratedvoltage. With a 63V rating and capacitance of 22µF, the newT97 device in the "F" case size is said to solve this long-standingissue by allowing designers to incorporate solid surface-mounttantalum capacitors into their +28V power supply designs whilefully complying with derating requirements. In addition to the T97Hi-Rel series, these ratings are also available in a commercialversion, the 597D series.
Featuring a dual anode construction to ensure what is described asthe lowest ESR in its class, the T97 series is designed forsafety-critical applications such as those found in the militaryand aerospace industries, including dc-to-dc converters and powerdistribution in weapons and radar systems, avionics, andspace-based electronics. It is claimed that the devices offerdesigners a wide array of ratings not found in available MILspecifications, combining the flexibility and convenience of acommercial product with the reliability needed in demandingapplications.
These conformal-coated capacitors with wrap-around terminationsoffer high-reliability screening options including Weibull grading,and surge current testing options in accordance with MIL-PRF-55365in five case sizes. This is said to differentiate the T97 devicesfrom commercial-grade capacitors by featuring the requiredreliability and surge screening options necessary to ensureperformance in Hi-Rel applications while still maintaining amaximum capacitance-voltage product, a figure of merit thatmeasures the amount of energy a capacitor can store, and helpsdesigners choose the best capacitor for their applications.
Part of Vishay’s TANTAMOUNT tantalum capacitor family, theT97 series has a capacitance range of 15 to 1500µF and avoltage range from 4 to 63V. It offers ultra-low ESR values, whichrange from 0.015 to 0.30Ω at +25°C and 100kHz. Devices inthe T97 series operate over a temperature range of -55 to+85°C, +125°C with voltage derating.
Samples and production quantities of the new 63V T97 are availablenow, with lead times of 7 to 10 weeks, depending on the level ofreliability screening requested. Pricing for U.S. delivery startsat $3.10 and varies depending on rating and screening options.
