Siemens Partner, Trend Machinery, Retrofits Grinder At Sandusky

One of Siemens' retrofit partners, Trend Machinery, Inc. ofWillowbrook, IL, recently completed a job on a four-axis, CNCNormac grinder at Sandusky International in Ohio. The machine isused to re-sharpen the gun drills that put thousands of holes intopaper mill rollers. The grinder was no longer holding permissibletolerance positions, and replacement parts and service were gettingincreasingly difficult to obtain, the company said.
As Bob Gordon, president of Trend Machinery, said, "Themachine was sent to us, as it was not difficult to transport forevaluation. We determined what the equipment needed, including aSiemens 810D CNC to replace the original control, as well as 611Udrives and 1FT6 motors, also from Siemens. An entirely new controlconsole and enclosure were customized for Sandusky. We alsoreplaced all the electronic hardware such as starters andrelays." Additionally, all limit switches were replaced, motormounts were modified and the grinding spindle was repaired.
The machine was returned to Sandusky with full electricalschematics, bill of material and program files. Also, the Normacgrinder was cleaned and completely repainted to customerspecification. Trend supplied a one-year warranty on all parts,backed by the primary component supplier, Siemens.
