Camera Corps Point-of-View video helmets added a new dimension tothe latest revival of the 1990s ITV hit 'Gladiators' when itappeared on UK's Sky One in May.

Two miniature cameras with integral cameras were provided, eachmounted in a boxer's helmet and linked to a Mini-DV recorder in aprotective backback. A and B stages at Shepperton Studios were usedfor the latest Gladiators production, within 100 metres of theCamera Corps headquarters.

"Our client in this project was Shine who produced this newseries," explains Camera Corps' Operations Director Matt Frost."The requirement was to capture the actual images seen bycontestants as they battled their way through one of the toughestgymnastic environments ever assembled for a television show. Weused a camera configuration which we had originally developed forfiremen. Being solid-state, the cameras are extremely robust. Weopted for Sony Mini-DV recorders on the basis that their verylow-inertia scanners would tolerate robust movement; they exceededall expectations and even provided the battery power to drive thecameras."

"The original plan was to use the helmet cameras to capturesupplementary video for podcasting on the Gladiators website ( www.gladiatorzone.co.uk )," adds Shine producer Nick Badham. "The quality and dynamism ofthe images proved so good that we included many clips into thebroadcast programmes."

Shine was founded by Elisabeth Murdoch in early 2001 and, afterrapid organic growth, is now in the top ranks of UK productioncompanies supplying television content to BBC, ITV, C4, five andSky.
