June 4, 2008 -- Atheros Communications, Inc. today announced that the industry'smost compact and power-efficient, single-chip XSPAN 802.11nsolutions are featured in the next-generation AMD notebook platformfeaturing AMD Turion X2 Ultra Processors. Atheros XSPAN designswill provide wireless connectivity to new notebooks based on thisplatform, which delivers state-of-the-art visual experiences andpower-efficient mobility to users.
XSPAN is the world's most widely adopted 802.11n technology,enabling a broad ecosystem of wireless products. It is the 11ntechnology of choice for the majority of the world's enterprisenetworking manufacturers and occupies a dominant position in theretail and carrier networking, and PC markets.
The Atheros AR9280 dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) 2x2 MIMO and AR9281single-band (2.4GHz) 1x2 MIMO PCI Express (PCIe) designs integratethe radio, baseband/MAC and host PCIe interface into the industry'ssmallest 802.11n footprint. Reference designs are available forboth PCIe half-Mini Card and full-Mini Card form factors. TheAR9280 and AR9281 provide industry-leading power savings and 11nrate over range performance, supporting up to 300 Mbps physicaldata rates and more than 200 Mbps of real user throughput.
Atheros' AR9280 and AR9281 are specifically designed to enableadvanced PC platforms with superior power efficiency tosignificantly extend battery life. Several innovative system-levelpower-savings protocols, algorithms and circuit design techniquesincluding Dynamic MIMO Power Save (DMPS), Unscheduled AutomaticPower Save Delivery (UAPSD) and Atheros Wake-on-Wireless areemployed in these designs.
The AR9280 and AR9281 also support Windows XP, Windows Vista, MacOS and Linux operating systems. In addition, they include supportfor industry standards WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia), Wi-Fi ProtectedSetup via Atheros' JumpStart for Wireless, the company's industrystandardized simple network configuration software, and CiscoCompatible Extensions (CCX).
