In case you didn't know, there were two home run contests in New York on Monday: the Home Run Derby, andHomers in the Hudson.
The latter took place at Pier 61 on Manhattan's West Side, overlooking the Hudson River. On a barge, stationed 150 feet awayfrom the pier, stood a 25-foot-tall inflatable bottle ofVitaminwater, topped off by a 5-foot baseball glove with a smallhole in the center. The first 200 fans who showed up got theopportunity to take one swing -- and one swing only -- off a tee atthe end of the pier. Hit the ball in the hole and you win $1million.
Worth a shot, right?
So I headed over to the Hudson bright and early Monday morning, ready to win my retirement fund. OK, truth be told, I was justhoping to make solid contact. You see, yours truly was an awful Little League hitter. I haven't played softball in a year, and Ihaven't been to a batting cage in several. Even using a tee, Ifeared I might make a fool of myself.
Before I got up there, Big Papi himself, David Ortiz, took a fewhacks to the delight of the fans -- not that he needs anothermillion bucks. Ortiz got plenty of distance, but he didn't find theglove. Most of the contestants in front of me all came up wellshort. I saw one guy whiff three straight times. And while I was ondeck, another guy managed to foul the ball backwards onto the roof of the facility. Surely I could do better than that.
When it was my turn, I donned a helmet, grabbed an aluminum bat, took a couple of practice swings in the on-deck circle and thenstepped right up and told myself to keep my eye on the ball. Thebarge actually looked a little closer than I thought it would. Itook a couple of measured half-swings and then took the bat backand let 'er rip.
