welcome to Lancashire Life. Eric’s making steadyprogress in his rehabilitation and is now managing to walk down thecorridor with his frame. He’s been showing the British HomingWorld to anyone who will listen and I think stirring up a bit ofinterest. It’s like a hotel in that place with a choice ofmenu and some really nice meals, I’m thinking of going for arest myself and get waited on although they don’t have Skytelevision unless you watch the big telly in the lounge.
During the week I went to the Park FC to show them how the Unikonsystem worked after getting slightly lost en-route. I think it wentok and it was nice to meet Bill Ferguson and his Grandson who Ihave spoken to on the phone. Bill is retired and takes his basketof pigeons on the bus for training as he doesn’t have anytransport, taking him two hours to get there and two hours back, that’s dedication for you. By the sound of it he reallyenjoys his birds and that’s what the sport is all about,it’s just a pity he couldn’t get someone locally totrain for him, so if you live near Bill (I think he lives inDidsbury) and are willing to take his birds for him let me know. He’s a nice chap and could do with a hand, I don’t knowhow he does it as he walks with a stick and is not in the best ofhealth.
Thursday was marking night for the Lancashire Combine with a tripto Messac on the programme. There was a reasonable turnout witheveryone having to shelter in the marking room because of thetorrential rain. There was supposed to be a bowling match on at theclub and there were bowlers actually stood outside ready to play, unbelievable. I thought us pigeon fanciers were daft sometimes butthey’re even dafter, the green was waterlogged. Anyway afterseeing the birds off with Phil Brown our Convoyer I managed to havea disagreement with one of the bowlers who hates the pigeons and isalways looking for an argument especially when he’s had afew, the words flying rats were mentioned in the bar and he’snot someone worth trying to have a reasonable discussion with.
Well the birds faced another holdover with the weather on thechannel unfit to liberate last Saturday. It was a really horribleday and was dull and murky all day so the decision was taken tohold over. Sunday dawned and it was a much more respectable day, although mid afternoon it did pour down in Manchester and I thoughtthe birds were going to have to face that on their 400 mile triphome. I decided to send six entries, three of which had been toFougeres two weeks before plus three others who I thought werecapable of doing the distance having flown the full programme.
In the morning I had gone to meet Wayne Jones from Shropshire whohad won a Unikon system in a charity raffle I held for the Make AWish Foundation on the Pigeon Chat forum. Wayne had travelled toManchester to have a look at the One Loft youngsters and wasthrilled to receive his prize after paying £10 for histickets, what a bargain and an excellent chance for him to enjoyusing the system for next to nothing. Good luck with it Wayne! Bythe time I got home the taste of bacon butties was calling so outcame the frying pan and in went the rashers with brown sauce on, mmm I can taste it now. Of course I had toshare with Pip as with everything I eat, no wonder her designerharness only just fits. I made a visit to Pets at Home to have alook what was on offer and spied a black leather harness with studsin, just her size or so I thought until I got it home and put itround her fat tummy. She does look nice in it though but I thinkshe just needs to lose a couple of inches. All the other birds werefed and watered and I waited for my first arrival.
After 8hrs 45mins a 2yo Red Janssen cock landed on top of the loftand went straight through the trap to his box. He didn’t messabout and when I opened his box to let him in with his hen he justcouldn’t be bothered he was too tired. After all he had justflown nearly 400 miles and wanted a rest, she could wait! I got areal buzz from seeing him return from France and although hedidn’t win I was very proud of his achievement, finishing insixth place but managing to get a prize card for his efforts.Although I don’t like the waiting around for hours on end Idid enjoy watching him come back to the loft, but Niort’sanother matter that’s another 100 miles plus on top! When Ipeeped in the loft later on to check if anymore had returned he wasall cosied up with his hen in the nest bowl so he had obviously hadenough food, water and rest. At the time of writing on Sunday nightmy other five entries have not returned but there’s time yet, they might be on top of the loft on Monday morning.
With the recent small spell of warm weather I’ve noticed thatsome of the birds have got lice or mites on their chest despite theuse of malt vinegar in the bath, maybe I’m not using itfrequently enough but they always seem to come at the same time. Inthe past I’ve tried those spot on the neck things and theystill come back. Strangely enough the widow cocks never seem to getthem and they have less baths than any of the other birds, I wonderif it has anything to do with the large number of trees at thebottom of the garden and if not why don’t all the racers getthem?
My apologies to a couple of clubs this week as I found some resultsmixed up with my own post, so sorry but I’ve included themthis week. There are a few clubs missing again this week due toanother holdover but we will catch up in the end.

After last weeks first two fromFrance the flying Pennington’s will be on a high also leadingthe channel averages with two wins out of two races from across thebrook. welcome to Lancashire Life.
