NEW DELHI: In a bid to modernize the investigation process and cutdown on investigation time, Delhi Police has decided to install afingerprint machine in each of the 139 police station in theCapital.
The proposal that was sent to the Delhi government last year hadreceived a go-ahead. "The Expression Of Interest (EOI) has beenissued last January and we are well into the process of awardingthe contract. All police stations in Delhi will get a fingerprintmachine in the next six months," said ACP Rajan Bhagat, spokesperson, Delhi Police.
According to senior police officials, the modernization was badlyneeded. "At present, there are only ten such machines available atthe 10 district headquarters. Finger printing is a basicinvestigating procedure and precious time is wasted due to lack ofthese machines," said a senior police officer.
Sources said the new machines would be slightly bigger in size thanthose used presently and would be able to store up to 2 lakhfingerprints.
All the fingerprints recorded through these machines would beaccessible through a master server. This would allow officers atany police station to access this data. "Once we arrest an accused,we will be quickly able to verify whether the accused has acriminal past by matching his fingerprints with this data. Thiswill help in better coordination among various police stations."added the senior police officer. For now, investigating officershave to go to the bureaus at the district offices to get thefingerprint records verified and matched for past offences.
According to a senior official, the process of recording thefingerprint is simple."The suspect is asked to place one of hisfingers on the machine which looks like a computer mouse. Once theinformation is recorded in the machine, it can be matched withprevious records digitally," said a senior police officer.
"We have also received approval to install CCTVs at policestations. The process of installing them is at a mature stage,"said Bhagat. Police officers said once the CCTVs are installed, theaccountability of the police would receive a major boost. "Then, nopolice station will be able to refuse to look into genuinecomplains and get away with it," said a senior police officer.
