Diaoshuilou Waterfall
2008-03-11
Location: Heilongjiang ProvinceThe Diaoshuilou Waterfall (Diaoshuilou pubu) is located at the northern end of the Jingpo Lake, and the water flows from here into the fast flowing Mudanjiang River. The waterfall was created by a huge dam built, but now redundant, in one of the narrowest points of the lake. This constriction gives added momentum to the flow of this 40m wide and 20m high spectacle, so that now, in notable contrast to the placid peace of the lake, the waterfall roars with impressive fervor.
In the winter months this waterfall, literally translated as the "Hanging Water Falls", is frozen, but it is the summer months that draw the crowds, adventurous travelers even plunging into the pools below the falls for a cooling swim and the best views of the rainbows that are seen near the spray.
How to get there: From the Gate to the Jingpo Lake Scenic Area there are numerous vendors eager to take you to the waterfall with their speedboats. You can either take their boats (remember to bargain) or go on the local tourist bus.
