Costumes of the Huangmei Opera
2008-03-13
The costumes of the Huangmei opera have the distinctive local flavor of ancient China. In most operas. artists wear ancient clothing. for most of the Huangmei operas are based on Chinese folk tales. As the contents of the opera are often varied. the clothing and sets change according to the social environment and customs of the opera. In the modern Huangmei operas. such as "A Woman of Huizhou". artists just wear daily clothing to perform the modern play.
Besides the aesthetics it brings. the beautiful coronet has another effective function in the opera. The audience can easily discern the characteristics of the figures in the opera by considering his or her headdress or hairstyle.
