Costumes vary among different clans of the Hani ethnic minority. This is especially so for women's clothes. Hani women in Honghe area wear collarless jackets with buttons made of silver coins down the left side of the front and long trousers. They usually inlay several colorful laces to the shoulders, front of the jackets, cuffs and bottom ends of trouser legs. When dressing up, they wear shawls decorated with peach blossoms over the edges, colorful aprons and leggings.
As for the Haoni clan in Mojiang area, women prefer to wear colorful collarless jackets with buttons on the right of the front, short skirts reaching the knees, white waistbands and blue or colored kerchiefs.
Women of Biyue clan wear long white jackets and homespun navy blue pailform skirts. They adorn their heads with red beans, wear long earbobs and coil kerchiefs around their heads.
Ximoluo clan women wear black jackets without buttons, white short skirts and angular kerchiefs and wrap their legs with black bine strings which have been soaked in paint.
Women in Xishuangbanna and Lancang areas wear short pleated skirts, leggings and caps inlaid with silver ornaments. Women in Menglian area like to wear big earbobs. Girls plait their hair and married women coil their plaits around the head, and wear black or blue caps or wrap their heads with black or blue cloth inlaid with small silver bubbles, beads or edgings woven with silk threads. In some places of Mojiang area, girls wear blue caps, white or pink waistcloth. They do not wear caps but blue waistcloth after marriage.
Hani men mostly wear jackets with buttons down the front or long trousers and wrap the head with black or white cloth.
