Dun embroidery, a category of embroidery in North China, is simple and natural, bold and free, a distinctive style of North China, as the Chinese character "Dun" (which means big and thick pier) suggests its whole connotation. The tool used for making Dun embroidery is like a syringe needle, being different from which is that it has a little eye in the front. Thread is first pulled through the needle and then the eye. The worker holds the needle in the manner of holding a brush pen and vertically. When weaving, the needle goes to and fro like a pecking chick through the cloth slightly. As a result, a piece of Dun embroidery takes a great deal of time. Works of Dun embroidery look thick, plump, feeling rather soft. With patterns on both sides, the works seem strongly dimensional compared with Chinese Four Famous Embroidery. Dun embroidery is a weaving type with its own distinctive characteristics in Northwestern China.
