MIDLAND, Mich., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dow CorningCorporation's Automotive Electronics group today globally launchedDOW CORNING(R) SE 1720 CV, a new controlled-volatility adhesivethat offers faster curing at lower temperatures than previousformulations. SE 1720 CV is suitable for a variety of automotiveuses, including case sealing and attaching electronic componentsfor underhood controllers, chassis & brake applicationslike steering controllers, and the growing segment of high-powerelectronics for example used in hybrid electric vehicles.
This silicone adhesive -- which already has been field-proven by aleading automotive electronics supplier -- offers a very fast curein comparison to many heat-cured adhesives now on the market. SE1720 CV starts adhesion to polybuthylene terephthalate (PBT)substrates in as little as five minutes with full adhesion in 30minutes at 80 degrees C.
For manufacturers, faster curing contributes to shorter cycletimes, smaller assembly-line footprints and lower capitalinvestments, thus lowering the cost of production. Further costsavings and environmental benefits result from being able to reduceoven temperatures, thus lowering energy consumption.Lower-temperature curing also allows the use of lower-costsubstrates that would be damaged by higher-temperature processes.
SE 1720 CV offers the added benefit of controlled volatility, whichimproves its suitability for use in close proximity to sensitiveelectronic and electrical devices such as relays, electrical motorsand potentiometers.
"This new material demonstrates Dow Corning's continued commitmentto developing innovative new technology with and for our keyautomotive partners," said Rogier Reinders, Dow Corning'sautomotive electronics market leader. "We look forward to meetingmore of our customers' needs with this latest expansion of ouradhesives product portfolio."
