ViviTint colorants enable the creation of special effects and aniline

At the Northwest Apparel andFootwear Materials (NW AFM) Show in Portland, Ore., MillikenChemical, a division of Milliken & Company, today launchedViviTint(TM) colorants, a new class of colorants for syntheticleather that provides the benefits of traditional pigments and dyeswithout their drawbacks. Patented ViviTint colorants represent amajor step up in this technology: they are made without heavymetals associated with health risks; they ensure very lowmigration; and as homogeneous liquids, they are easily incorporatedinto commercial resins.

From a design standpoint, ViviTint colorants enable the creation ofspecial effects and aniline leather-like effects in syntheticleather that are difficult or impossible to achieve with currenttechnologies. They feature bright, vibrant color with glass-liketransparency that enhances design. Six primary colors can beblended to achieve an almost limitless palette.

"Many trends are driving today's double-digit growth in thesynthetic leather market, but until now, the industry has lacked acolorant solution that could help accelerate that growth," saidLisa Clark, business development manager, Milliken Chemical. "Tocapitalize on the popularity of synthetic leather in fashionfootwear, handbags, accessories and furniture, manufacturers anddesigners need colorants that can expand design freedom, solveperformance issues and simplify manufacturing. ViviTint colorantsdo all that and more. They fill a longstanding gap in the market."

ViviTint colorants offer the bright color and transparency of dyescombined with the low migration properties of pigments. Theyeliminate the use of toxic heavy metals - such as chromium, cobalt,lead, etc - found in some dyes and pigments. ViviTint colorantssurpass both dyes and pigments in color consistency, shelfstability and ease of processing. This technology also reducesinventory: instead of stocking many different shades of pigment ordye, manufacturers may simply custom-blend the six primary colorsin the ViviTint colorant portfolio.

ViviTint colorants are commercially available and are currentlybeing trialed and used in synthetic leather footwear, handbags andsporting goods applications.
