18/08/08 Previous research from the University of Connecticut, USAhas shown that supplementation with Carnipure tartrate, a verystable salt form of L-Carnitine, beneficially affects markers ofoxidative stress following resistance exercise. However, themechanism for this response remained unclear. A newcompany-supported study from the same research group was releasedin the July 2008 issue of the Journal of Strength and ConditioningResearch. This study demonstrates that supplementation withCarnipure tartrate actually induces an increase in muscle oxygenconsumption, providing a potential mechanism for reduced hypoxicstress following resistance exercise.
Resistance exercise is known to cause muscle hypoxia, whichtriggers a biochemical process resulting in free radical formationand membrane disruption. For the athlete, this means muscle damage, muscle soreness and reduced performance. Any attenuation of musclehypoxia would therefore contribute to a faster and better recoveryfrom exercise.
Changes were found in tissue oxygenation response of the thighmuscle in resistance trained athletes during the recovery periodsfollowing squat exercises. This led to the conclusion that theCarnipure tartrate-supplemented group had higher muscle oxygenconsumption than the placebo group. “We’re pleased withthis new evidence since it further strengthens the story behind thebenefits of Carnipure tartrate on exercise recovery”,comments Kevin Owen, Ph.D., Head of Technical marketing andscientific affairs - North America at Lonza.
This research is also supported by another study actually publishedat the same time by an Indian research group led by Arkadeb Duttain Experimental Physiology. Rats were exposed to hypoxia inducedoxidative stress and supplementation with L-Carnitine was found toreduce oxidative damage and thereby delay muscular fatigue.
L-Carnitine is produced by the body and plays a critical role infat and energy metabolism. It carries long-chain fatty acids, oneof the primary energy sources for our body, into the mitochondriawhere they are broken down for energy generation. This isespecially important for anyone who leads an active lifestyle andhas high energy needs. A vast amount of research has shown thatCarnipure tartrate supplementation may be beneficial not only forelite athletes, but also recreational active people.
Lonza is the only manufacturer of the Carnipure brand ofL-Carnitine products including Carnipure tartrate (U.S. Patent5073376, Japan Patent JP 2546068 and other international patents).Carnipure tartrate consists of 68% pure L-Carnitine and 32%L-tartaric acid and is self affirmed as GRAS (Generally Recognizedas Safe). Carnipure products are crystalline, white, water-solubleand heat stable which makes them ideal for use in various food anddrink applications. In addition, Carnipure tartrate isnon-hygroscopic, odorless, has a pleasant citrus taste andexcellent flowability. Carnipure products are kosher certified.
