The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has applied to the City ofWilliamsburg to allow reconstruction of Richard CharltonsCoffeehouse on its original foundations to recreate the 1765 hotbedof political, business and social activity adjacent to the colonialCapitol. The project is one of the most important reconstructionson the Historic Areas Duke of Gloucester St. in half a century andis made possible by a generous $5 million gift from Mr. and Mrs.Forrest E. Mars Jr. of Big Horn, Wyo.
Reconstructing Charltons Coffeehousethe foundations firstcomplete reconstruction in 50 yearswill constitute a majorarchitectural and educational contribution to the Historic Area,said Colin G. Campbell, Colonial Williamsburgs president and chiefexecutive officer. We are extremely grateful to Forrest andDeborah Mars. Their gift will enable Colonial Williamsburg tohighlight the importance of the Coffeehouse in the social andpolitical life of Williamsburg during the period preceding theAmerican Revolution. We anticipate that the project will be ofgreat interest to guests, scholars, artisans and other observers.When reconstructed, the coffeehouse will be the only one of itskind in the U.S., and ticketed visitors will have the opportunityto enjoy hot tea, coffee, chocolate and pastries in an authenticmid-18th-century setting.
Richard Charlton, a Williamsburg wigmaker, converted an existingstorehouse into a coffeehousea single story-and-a-half wood framebuilding over a brick cellar with a porch running along the entirefront facing Duke of Gloucester St. The location, most recently thesite of the Cary Peyton Armistead House, has been the subject ofextensive archeological research in consultation with the Armisteadfamily.
