MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin homeowners in disaster-declared countiesmay be eligible for disaster aid to help repair flood-damaged wellsand septic systems, state and federal officials said.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grants can help pay topump septic tanks, perform required repairs or replace the systemas needed. Damaged private wells that are the sole source of waterfor the home also may be repaired or decontaminated.
"We don't want anyone living in a house with contaminated water orraw sewage," said Federal Coordinating Officer Dolph Diemont."Applicants for state and federal disaster assistance should tellthe FEMA inspector they have a private well and septic system."
Home-repair grants are designed to restore the home to a safe,secure and functional condition. To qualify for this disasterassistance, the applicant-owned home must be a primary residence.Grants are not intended to restore a home to pre-disaster conditionand cannot be used for cosmetic repairs or repairs covered byinsurance.
Any Wisconsin resident in a declared county, who suffered damage orlosses from the recent storms and flooding, can register fordisaster assistance by calling the FEMA toll-free registrationnumber, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) . The number for people with hearing or speech impairment is (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 . Individuals also may register for disaster assistance at the FEMAWeb site www.fema.gov .
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for,preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, andrecovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural orman-made, including acts of terror.
