In July 2008 Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (Mechel OAO'ssubsidiary), awarded Danieli the contract for the supply of a newmedium section mill and associated heat treating and on-linefinishing facilities for production of 1,100,000-tpy of rails, beams and special profiles, on a turnkey basis, (excludingerection, building and civil works).
Thanks to the advanced technologies applied, the new plant will beone of the most modern rolling mills of this type in Europe and inthe whole world.
The range of production will include more than 50% of the productmix dedicated to high-quality rails of up to 65-kg/m for railwaysand other applications (including special rails, vignoles, cranes, tram, etc.) supplied in up to 100-m lengths. The rest of the mixwill be mostly concentrated on parallel-flange and other types ofbeams in up to 600-mm sizes, plus a minority portion of angles, channels and special sections.
The project foresees the installation of a new Danieli CentroCombustion walking beam reheating furnace with a 240-tph nominalcapacity, for up to 300x360-mm blooms and up to 610x320x100-mm beamblanks. The hot rolling area will be based on the re-utilization ofan existing Break Down stand (BD1), a new Break Down stand (BD2)and the new PSP intermediate and finishing sizing line that will bemade up of a three-stand UFR pre-finishing reversing mill plus asingle finishing-sizing stand.
After the finishing stand, a HiProfile gauge unit will enablein-line product size measurement and control, while the in-linerail hardening operation will be made possible thanks to adedicated system, specifically designed by Danieli.
The PSP system will be based on SCC (Stand Core Concept)super-heavy duty universal rolling stands, featuring 1,200-mm-dia(in Universal version), all fitted with automatic fast changing ofthe rolls and guides package.
Downstream of the cooling bed and the H/V straightener, dedicatedfacilities will be provided, respectively for beams/sections andfor rail cold processing and finishing.
The "rail" line will feature press-straightening, NDT inspection,sawing/drilling, final inspection and collecting. The "beam" linewill include cold sawing and a double-head automatic magneticstacker, bundling and collecting.
All electricals and the advanced automation and process controlsystem will be from Danieli Automation. The turnkey supply willalso include all necessary auxiliary plants and systems.
Hot startup of the new mill is scheduled for the Q4 2010.
