posey wants a multi year contract at the MLE. he's 31, and i expectthat posey sees this as his big payday and last contract. let's saywe get him at a 4 year deal. will he be effective at 35, or justanother expiring contract in 2013? he's the seller in a seller'smarket in what is now a pretty weak free agent market. james jonescould have been a good "posey light" option but i think he signed a4 year 16 mil contract. and if jones can get that, posey should beable to get his 4 year MLE.
then again, posey actually played on two teams that have won it all- something marshall can't claim. and that's the way it issometimes, you can have great looking stats playing for bad teams.that's part of why i'm not convinved about redd - he's been in theplayoffs 3 times, shot .250 & .300 from the arc two of those threetimes - and that was before he hurt his knee. we've already gotplayers who can do that - for less money!.
i think it was windhorst (brian, get well soon) who noticed thatpavlovic plays better when a family member is in town -particularly his dad, who was a decent player back in the day. ithink what we need to do there is get a serbian mail order bridecatalog and get this guy hooked up with some home cooking orsomething.
the thing is brown is a good enough defensive coach that he will beable to field teams that will compete, even though it's not pretty.despite the star power on their team, boston won it with defense -and most of the time, their offense consistied of pick and rolls atthe top of the key - sometimes 2 or 3 in single possession. theonly difference they had enough talent spread around no one had todo it themselves. the way lebron feels he has to now. the offensewill be more than adequate if we can improve the talent andskill-set.
but here's the catch22:
1) we have to suck bad enough to get high draft picks the way theceltics did, but as long as brown is coach and lebron is healthy,we'll never be a lottery team.
2) while brand and davis did something relatively unprecedented bygiving up money to move, they still got contracts that were morethan their home teams were willing to offer - so if the home teamreally wants to retain a player, we can't lure him away as a FA -we tried to get redd or allen and had to settle for hughes - andmarshall - and jones - at the time they were the best optionsavailable for a team who was near the bottom of the league at 3pt %at the time.
3) so we've got to try and trade for a guy would can come in and bean impact player. but any team that might consider dumping a guy toclear cap space is probably targeting 2010 and hoping to lurelebron away so they'll be reluctant to give us a player that wouldmake lebron want to stay - like the nets who basically gave awayjefferson - and passed on our attempt(s) to get vince carter.
and ferry can't do anything about any of these points, so whileit's not easy to hear, staying pat might just be the best option -a break here or there, and we win either game 1 or game 7 againstthe celtics.
when you consider the constraints, the only thing i can heartilyding ferry on is drafting shannon brown - izzo-coached players whoare really only 6'1" (find a pic of brown, gibson and wesleystanding together - they're all about the same height) do not dowell in the NBA.
but then again, the goal was to draft gibson - and ferry was astuteenough to realize gibson would still be available at #42 orwhatever it was - making him a pretty good pick at that point inthe draft.
the bottom line: posey would be nice, but i don't think we canafford him to be tying up 6-7mil a year in 2012 & 2013 - whether westill have lebron or not.
i wonder if the lakers would consider swapping lamar odom (who's anexpiring contract of 16-17 mil or so) for wally & damon jones - themoney would be even up, but the lakers are close to the cap withholes on their roster to fill so they'd fill a roster spot withouthaving to spend any more money. also, with bynum coming back, lamaris a player without a position - gasol will probably move to the 4,and phil jackson won't play a guy at the 3 unless he has an outsideshot - which odom doesn't - and wally does.
