Springs Utilities to recycle fly ash

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A deal for Colorado SpringsUtilities to recycle waste from two power plants is expected tosave the city on landfill costs and even draw extra revenue.
The city-owned utility has contracted with the Massachusettscompany Separation Technologies, which will process 120,000 to130,000 tons of fly ash produced per year by the city's twocoal-fired power plants.
Carbon can be filtered out of fly ash to make it usable as asubstitute for cement in making concrete.
Utility officials hope to bring in up to $2 million annually in ashsales and save the city $620,000 in landfill costs.
The city spends about $168 million generating power.
