Four cars of a CP Rail freight train were travelling on a CN track, about 10 kilometres north of Lytton, when they were struck by aslide Tuesday night following a major rainstorm in the area.
Also Friday, a dive team drove three birch hardwood plugs intoholes in the tank car that was leaking. Ron Friesen, a woodworkinghobbyist in Lillooet, had spent Thursday evening turning the plugson his home lathe.
"They needed to drive hardwood plugs into the top of the valves tokeep turbulence from going into the tank and displacing theglycol," said Lytton Mayor Chris O'Connor, who put CP Railofficials in touch with Friesen.
"They specifically wanted hardwood," said Friesen, a retiredwoodlands worker for Ainsworth Lumber who did the job withoutdiscussing payment.
"I was able to get birch," he said.
"I went to the Ainsworth mill. They didn't have any fresh wood. Ifound a couple of dry pieces that weren't cracked."
LoVecchio said crews also secured the two cars to the riverbankFriday, using cable, bolts and anchors.
