(Prudent Press Agency)--- In the past, soda water was produced inthe home by "charging" a refillable seltzer bottle by filling itwith water and then adding carbon dioxide. Club soda may beidentical to plain carbonated water or it may contain a smallamount of table salt, sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate, potassiumbicarbonate, potassium sulfate, or disodium phosphate, depending onthe bottler.

These additives are included to emulate the slightly salty taste ofhomemade soda water. The process can also occur naturally toproduce carbonated mineral water, such as in Mihalkovo in theBulgarian Rhodopes.

Sparkling mineral water is a negligible cause of dental erosion.While the dissolution potential of sparkling water is greater thanstill water, levels remain low: by comparison, soft drinks causetooth decay at a rate of several hundred times that of regularsparkling water. De-gassing of a sparkling mineral water reducesits dissolution potential, but the total levels are stillrelatively low, suggesting that carbonation of drinks may not be animportant factor per se in causing dental erosion.[3]

Intake of carbonated beverages has not been associated withincreased bone fracture risk in observational studies, and the neteffect of carbonated beverage constituents on the amount of calciumin the body is negligible, leaving carbonated water as harmless asregular water.[3]

Energy drinks are soft drinks advertised as providing more energythan a typical drink. The amount of quantitative 'energy' (asmeasured in calories) in these drinks is often lower than that inregular soft drinks.[1] According to the Marin Institute, there isno scientific basis for concluding that the non-caffeine elementsin these drinks contribute to either mental alertness or physicalperformance.
