Survey reveals trends that play a major role in healthcare IT

The survey reveals that increasing compliance requirements arehaving a considerable impact on the people, processes andtechnology used in today's healthcare organizations and are havingan affect on organizational structure, responsibilities andpurchases.
Other survey findings include: nearly 60 percent of healthcare organizations now employ a ChiefCompliance Officer; close to 40 percent of IT decision-maker respondents said theyspend 11 percent to 40 percent of their time on compliance; and 91 percent acknowledge HIPAA regulations influence or stronglyinfluence IT purchasing decisions.
Additionally, the survey indicates there has been increasedscrutiny on prescription drug orders at the state level, withstates passing legislation that requires strong authentication atthe time of the electronic transaction, adding more compliancerequirements. For example, 44 percent of respondents say theirorganizations face state requirements for electronic prescriptiondrug order authentication and verification today. Also, 33 percentclaim their organization's security policies would be easier tosupport if applications could authenticate credentials eitherduring or just prior to a transaction in addition to at the start.
"As hospitals continue to go digital, the reliance onapplications for healthcare employees to do their job each dayincreases significantly," said John Clark, healthcare industryproduct manager at Imprivata . "The key is delivering employees secure, easy and instantaccess to information regardless of their location whilesimultaneously ensuring that unauthorized persons are deniedaccess. Delivering on this will be a key influence on theproductivity of healthcare organizations and the continuoussecurity of patient data."
