DAVID Jackson from Cool Clean Technologies claims the use of composite carbon dioxide (CO2) machining fluidscan improve cycle time and thermal stability.
When machining a polymer-coated precision valve spool, an 80-gritgrinding wheel was observed to generate temperatures up to 232degrees Celsius. If a traditional coolant-lubricant approach wasused, processing would need to be interrupted because of thermalexpansion at the polymer-metal interface.
A composite CO2 machining fluid spray consisting of air, MQL-Soyoil and carbon dioxide particles directed into the grinding zonewould maintain substrate temperatures to under 32 degrees Celsius.
The CO2 machining fluid allowed efficient removal of excess heatwith minimal oil lubrication. The machining operation could becompleted in a single and continuous step, reducing cycle time andimproving dimensional stability.
Precision grinding with the machining fluid technology can alsoreduce wheel dressing intervals, with reported increases of 50% inparts production between wheel dressing intervals.
