Banning teens' access to cosmetic surgery

The Government is seeking to alter that by making it more difficult for girls to have vanity breast enhancements, tummy tucks and botox injections.

Premier Anna Bligh has accepted there are sometimes good medical and psychological reasons for corrective surgery, but rightly questions the need for purely cosmetic procedures.

There are risks with all types of surgery and, arguably, some young women are susceptible to fads and fashions and are too immature to make considered judgments before undergoing intrusive procedures.

Some may see the law as an assault on personal freedom but, given the exemptions for corrective and image-enhancing surgery, it would merely give some legal foundation to what should be exercises in ethical medicine and sensible, protective parenting.
