White Brite laundry detergent gets stains out
[2008-4-2]
Q: For years I used a laundry additive that got my dull white clothes and dish towels white again. It was called Yellow Out. I can no longer find this product and suspect it's one of the many wonderful products that has been discontinued. Is it out there anywhere? If so, please find it for me.
PAULA NEWKIRK, Decatur
A: Good news, Paula, your additive hasn't been ditched; rather, it received a new moniker. Summit brands Yellow Out is now known as White Brite. It's the same product — a white powder you add to your regular detergent that's designed to remove dinginess, yellowing as well as color runs when you've accidentally tossed that red washcloth in with the white load. White Brite also is designed to prevent rust build-up in your washing machine. Several Kroger stores carry the product in the laundry aisle. In your area, you'll find White Brite for $3.49 for a 22-ounce jar at Kroger, 2875 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, 404-294-5311.
Q: Where can I find a light malt drink by Horlicks in individual packs? I don't want chocolate malt, and I don't want it in jars. I enjoyed this beverage while traveling in England. Do you have any idea where I might look?
HAROLD LAMPLY, Dunwoody
A: Known as a nighttime drink to help you get to sleep, Horlicks light malt is available in individual servings. Simply add hot water and you have a soothing drink. Ingredients include wheat flour, malted barley and dried skim milk. Individual packets are available for $1.49 each at Cost Plus World Market, 4733 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody, 678-731-0014.
Q: I have a friend who is looking for canned Brunswick stew. I have checked the local markets thinking I could find it, but I've had no luck.
DIANE GENTER, via e-mail
A: So many local barbecue joints serve various permutations of Brunswick stew that it's no wonder that this Southern favorite isn't found on every grocer's shelf. But for those who don't have time to seek out the real deal, there's Castleberry's American Originals Brunswick stew made with chicken and beef. You can find 24-ounce cans for $1.99 at Super Target, 100 Perimeter Center Place, Atlanta, 678-259-0888.
Q: I met my husband when we were in college, and he used to wear Chaz Classic. I know it's probably not even around these days, and it certainly wasn't a very expensive cologne, but I'd really love to find it for him if it's still available. It would bring back fond memories for both of us.
LEIGH TOMPKINS, Atlanta
A: Chaz Classic for Men by Jean Philippe is still around. It was launched in the mid-1970s. The fragrance combines lavender and citrus notes, with a hint of oriental woods. You'll find 2.5-ounce bottles of the cologne for $6.99 in the Harmon drugstore section of Bed Bath & Beyond, 130 Perimeter Center W., Atlanta, 770-673-0171.
Q: There is a dear friend of mine who loves ripe olives in a can with the pits left in them. I have found several kinds of ripe black olives in cans, but all are pitted. He loves to suck on the pits — I don't ask why, I just want to find out where I can buy a couple of cases for him. Like all of the others who have asked for your help, I have looked all over Atlanta, but I cannot seem to find them. He does not like the kalamata olives, only plain ones. Thank you for any help you can give me on this one.
MARTHA GILLAND, Conyers
A: Martha, if the plump black olives aren't pitted, then you can't place them on the tips of your fingers and pop them into your mouth. But for those who don't care to eat them that way, Ybarra offers canned black olives from Spain, con hueso — with pits intact. They come in 12-ounce cans that sell for $1.29 each at DeKalb Farmers Market, 3000 E. Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur, 404-377-6400.
