Concentrated Laundry Detergent Downsides
[2008-4-1]
Have you seen the new bottles of laundry detergent? They're concentrated, so you dont have to use as much.
And as long as you get the same number of loads per bottle. No problem, right? Maybe not.
The New Detergent
We examined two bottles of Wisk. You get the same 32 loads in each bottle, at the same price. But the new one is 2 times more concentrated, with 50 ounces instead of 100.
Tide and other brands are doing the same thing to save space and be "greener."
The Problem
But Amanda Gibson and Jennifer Jackson quickly discovered a downside, when we spoke with them at a local laundromat.
I asked "can you figure out how much to fill that cap? " No," they said. "We'd fill it to the top!"
Every customer we spoke with had a hard time finding the fill line halfway down the new cap.
How you may use too much
This is a great idea in theory...IF you fill the cap with the recommended 1.5 ounces of detergent. But how many people will fill the cap just that much?
Customer Billy Johns told me "I put in about a full cap. Which is probably a bit too much!"
Jennifer admitted she filled the cap "not to the top, but more than halfway."
The problem: use a full cap and you use double the amount for a normal load....which means instead of going green, your budget may end up going red.
Bottom Line
So check that lid carefully on these new bottles. If you fill the cap the same way you have for years, you won't get the number of uses listed on the side of the bottle....and you'll pay a lot more per load.
So be careful, and don't waste your money. I'm John Matarese
