Tech edge aids park lead biochemical sector

[2008-3-27]

The corn industry park in Jilin Province's Changchun Economic and Technological Development Area is gearing up to build itself into a key national biochemical industry base.

The authorities' vision for the future is backed by the strong performance of the park's leading corn industrial company - Dacheng Group.

The group company has developed a proprietary technology in producing chemical alcohol with corn and is now one of the world leaders in terms of corn processing capacity and lysine output.

Dacheng's annual corn processing capacity has reached more than 2 million tons, more than any of its Chinese peers.

Further, it is also a national leader in terms of its annual output of 800,000 tons of starch sugar, 150,000 tons of modified starch and 300,000 tons of lysine, according to the company.

Its yearly lysine output, in particular, is reported to account for 40 percent of the total global production.

With a distinct technological edge, Dacheng Group makes full and comprehensive use of the rich local corn resources and is expanding its product portfolio.

To further boost its growth, the company is also making more investments in new production facilities.

While a new 200,000-ton chemical alcohol production line with an investment of 750 million yuan has already been put into operation, another set of projects worth 12 billion yuan in total investment value have begun construction.

These new projects under construction are expected to generate 40 billion yuan in annual revenue when they are completed in 2009, as a result of which the annual industrial revenue realized by the company is expected to reach nearly 60 billion yuan.

Capitalizing on technological advantage in chemical alcohol production, Dacheng is poised to develop into one of the leading players in China's biochemical industry.

The corn-processing industry is valued as a pillar sector of Jilin Province, second to automobiles, with the Dacheng Group as the sector's mainstay.

The park's annual output of corn deep-processed products is projected to exceed 100 billion yuan in around a decade.

As a main corn production base in China, Jilin Province has a distinct advantage in developing its grain processing industry. It produced 19 million tons of corn last year, the rich output ensuring an ample supply of raw materials.

Meanwhile, due to its being a key petrochemical base, Jilin has a well-trained workforce for the chemical industry, which provides strong technological support for producing chemical alcohol.

chemical alcohol has a lower production cost and involves less material consumption than petroleum, thus enjoying a clear comparative advantage, experts say.

In addition to promoting the corn industry, corn processing also helps spur the growth of related industries such as textiles, plastics manufacturing, automobiles and food products.
