Sipa aims for flexibility in the China market

HANGZHOU, ZHEJIANG (July 22, 2008) -- After a whirlwind debut onthe Chinese market more than a decade ago, Italian bottle machinerycompany Sipa SpA has gained a reputation in the region. With thehelp of a new China-made injection press and increasing marketingefforts, however, its a reputation the company is looking toexpand.

“The China market in the past knew us mainly for our one-stepintegrated [blow molding] system,” said Ruggero Apolloni, theoperation director at Sipa Machinery Hangzhou Co. Ltd. “Wesee a big potential for our entire portfolio -- blowing machines,injection machines, molds and ARS [air-recovery systems].”

Sipa entered the Chinese market in 1996 when a handful of largeorders came from China-based manufacturers. The Vittorio Veneto,Italy-based company was pressed to tackle the size of the orders.

“There were two or three customers that placed repetitiveorders from 10 to 20 machines at a time,” he said. “Tenyears ago, that was a big task for Sipa.”
When Sipa opened an operation in Hangzhou, the first priority wasto help support the customers that the company already had inChina. In this capacity, the company grew quickly and currentlysupports more than 200 machines in the country with around 30full-time technicians.
