The Chinese affiliate of Dallas-based Celanese Corp. (NYSE: CE) has signed an agreement with Shanghai Zhangjiang(Group) Co. Ltd to establish an integrated technology and marketingfacility in the Zhangjiang High-Tech Par in Shanghai.
Upon completion in 2010, the office building will serve as theheadquarters for Celanese China's business groups, including AcetylIntermediates, Advanced Engineered Materials and Consumer andIndustrial Specialties. It also will house customer applicationdevelopment and research and development operations.
Combining the groups under one roof will result in shorter leadtimes, greater flexibility and cost advantages, the company says.It will bring together 300 to 400 Celanese scientists, designengineers and technical experts, accelerating the transition,adaptation and development of Celanese's state-of-the-art chemicaltechnologies.
"This R&D and application development center is the nextphase of our investment in China and Asia that further positions usto meet our customers' needs in the fastest growing region of theworld," said John J. Gallagher III, executive vice presidentand president of Acetyl Intermediates and Celanese Asia.
Celanese Corp. products, used in numerous consumer and industrialapplications, are manufactured in North America, Europe and Asia.The company's net sales totaled $6.4 billion in 2007, withapproximately 70 percent generated outside of North America. Thecompany employs about 8,400 employees worldwide.
