Nitish for conversion of Bihar Agriculture University
Patna, (PTI): The Rajendra Agricultural University at Pusa in Biharshould be made a Central Agricultural University, state ChiefMinister Nitish Kumar on Sunday said in a letter to Prime MinisterManmohan Singh.
"Pusa, the headquarter of present agricultural university is aheritage as systematic agricultural research and education in thecountry started from there way back in 1905 when ImperialAgricultural Reasearch Institute was started by the then Britishgovernment," Kumar said in the letter which was released to thepress here.
The Rajendra Agricultural University is located in Samastipurdistrict.
The institute was shifted to New Delhi in 1936 and a small portionof the area continues as regional station of Indian AgricultureResearch Institute (IARI), he said, adding subsequently, RajendraAgriculture University was established in 1971 with its headquarterat Pusa.
"This is the only agriculture university in the state andconsidering the historical importance of Pusa and also the historicNDC resolution committed to agriculture development, it would be innational interest to convert this university as national/centralagricultural university," Kumar said.
He informed the Prime Minister about the state government puttingspecial focus on Bihar's agricultural development and drew hisattention to the recent meeting of the NDC in which it was saidthat agricultural planning needed to take account of localagroclimatic conditions and also capabilities.
