Auto safety solutions from Dow Corning
D. Murali and T. Murrali
Chennai: With demand for higher speeds coupled with fuel economyincreasing rapidly there emerges a dire need for safety to preventpotential hazards. Here is where some recent solutions from DowCorning, in the areas of friction control additives, coating onairbags, and silicone lenses for light emitting diodes (LEDs) arerelevant, says Mr Randall Rozin , the companys automotive industry leader, interacting with Business Line over the email.Excerpts from the interview.
First, about friction-control additives and your work in thisspace.
Friction control additives are solid substances that are applied insliding surfaces to reduce friction and wear and prevent scoring. They are frequently used in friction brakes, which convert velocityinto heat through friction. The brake components (pad/disc orlining/drum) are in sliding contact, which can be controlled bylubricants (friction control additives) which will not reducefriction, but stabilise friction at a controlled level. We offer arange of specialty lubricants with particular properties andcharacteristics for use in situations where stresses occur that arebeyond the capacity of conventional lubricants, such as highpressure, extreme high and low temperatures, vibration, shockloads, start-up and run-down phases, sliding surfaces heavilyloaded during running-in and aggressive environments.
To what extent can this improve braking effectiveness, life ofbrake pads etc.?
Research on solid friction control additives at Dow Corning hasproduced new technology, which allows friction and wear propertiesto be tailored to specific requirements. The technology has beenfound to reduce noise level, minimise disc wear and change offriction with different temperatures. Dow Corning friction-controladditives also provide moisture protection and high heat stabilityto guard against corrosion problems.
In addition to braking system, what are the other applications forfriction-control additive?
Our friction control additives are also used in clutch lining andlinings for drum brakes on personal or commercial vehicles, including extreme heavy-duty applications such as railroadingapplications.
Could you elaborate on the new coating you have developed thatallows side curtain airbags to remain inflated longer?
Dow Corning delivered cost-effective, high-performance coating witha low coat weight that allows airbag cushions to retain pressurefor longer durations after a deployment. The new coating systemconsists of a silicone basecoat that allows the airbag cushion toretain pressure and reduces inflation times. The low coat weightalso ensures that the airbag cushion can be easily folded andcomplies with vehicle manufacturers specifications, includingdimensional requirements to allow for integration into vehicleheadliners. Besides, a flame-retardant liquid silicone rubbertopcoat is also applied to the airbag cushion.
LED generally consumes milliamps - what is the change in itscharacteristics with the presence of silicone lenses.
Silicone fades out (or yellows) less than many organic materials, ensuring light output and stay stable for a longer duration.
What are other benefits for the end customer?
Due to better thermal and photo stability, silicones greatly extendthe useful life of LEDs. Stability and longer device lifetime arecritical for high reliability applications such as automotive. Thiscan also be especially important for blue and white LEDs which candegrade other encapsulating or lens materials. These blue and whiteLEDs are key to capturing new markets and applications in generallighting where it is expected that LEDs will provide greaterefficiency, longer lifetimes, and economic payback in replacingtraditional lighting sources.
Do you foresee collaborative product development for yourinventions such as silicone lenses, friction-control additives andnew coating for airbags?
We are already working with the leaders in this LED segment veryclosely, as all need slightly different highly transparent highrefractive index silicones.
What is the impact on environment when the old products arerecycled?
Sustainability is one of our core values. The company continues todevelop its materials conversion programmes to identify materialsthat can be collected and recycled. Were working to convertmaterials into various other product streams and to reduce landfilland other disposal issues.
