The event is free to the public; vendors charge for theirmerchandise.
The burnout, a contest to see how long cars can burn rubber withoutmoving forward, will be judged on time, smoke and sound.
"We stand there with our fire extinguishers and hose," Robinsonsaid.
There are other, calmer things to see also: Close to 200mint-condition cars from across the region are expected to be ondisplay by the Caprock Classic Car Club. A cruise is planned at 7p.m.
The event has attracted as many as 250 cars in the past, butCaprock activities director Linda Lacewell guesses that gasolineprices could possibly lessen that number by 75 this year.
Approximately 3,000 people turn out for the event, according toRobinson. "They can park all around the square and on the sidestreets. There's also parking at the library, Citizens Bank, theSlaton Independent School District central office and a churchparking lot just down from the square."
Music will be played by a DJ for the event.
The burnout contest, in addition to offering first, second andthird places in a variety of categories, has another motive also, according to Rick Povlich, president of Caprock:
"They can do it without getting a ticket. It's the only legal timeto do a burnout."
