Mr. Tidbit has mentioned all of these nutrition bandwagons before-- often -- but each seems to be, if anything, picking up steam. Sohe needs to note in passing the presence of even more (and in somecases even more peculiar) appearances of pomegranate, darkchocolate and fiber. (No new Omega-3 sightings this week.) Ready?
High-fiber V8 vegetable juice (5 grams of fiber, from maltodextrin)per 8-ounce serving; regular V8 has 1 gram); Hansen's dietpomegranate soda (''natural flavors with extract of Californiapomegranates''); Starbucks dark chocolate mocha Frappuccino;Planters Chocolate Lovers Almonds ''double dipped in rich darkchocolate''; dark chocolate Select Chex Mix; and Haagen-Dazspomegranate dark chocolate ice cream bar. (Any day now, Haagen-Dazswill wake up to the need for some extra fiber in there -- and maybeeven some Omega-3s.)
For this next entry, Mr. Tidbit needs to break his rule aboutwaiting until he sees a product in the store before mentioning it,because this new item is so odd it might never show up in yourstore unless you jump up and down in front of the manager andthreaten to turn blue until he or she orders it. For the consumerso knowledgeable about these things that he or she wantsantioxidants but not fiber, or fiber but not antioxidants -- orjust calcium -- it's new Mott's Plus no-sugar-added applesauce, infour-packs of 3.9-ounce tubs, in three flavors: pomegranateantioxidants, cranberry raspberry fiber and harvest apple calcium.
GRAINY GOLD
And don't miss new Kellogg's Frosted Flakes Gold ''crunchy flakesmade with whole grain and baked with honey.'' For what it's worth,it is quite different from regular Frosted Flakes, in which theonly grain is milled corn. Frosted Flakes Gold contains whole graincorn, rice, corn bran, whole grain wheat and milled corn. Honey isthe third sweetener -- after sugar and high-fructose corn syrup.
VERY NATURAL
You can be forgiven if when you saw Tropicana's new ''CoastalGroves 100 percent natural lemonade,'' you thought that, like the''100 percent'' that one finds on the front label of many juiceproducts, the ''100 percent'' here was the amount of juice in thethree varieties (original, raspberry and peach) of naturallemonade. No; it's how entirely natural they are (there are noartificial preservatives, etc.). They contain 10 to 16 percentjuice, maybe a tad less than homemade lemonade.
