Import duties rise on luxury items

In order to restrict the importation and consumption of luxury commodities and reduce the trade deficit, the Finance Minister has issued Decision No. 37/2008/ QD-BTC. The decision deals with revised preferential import duty rates of some commodities under the Preferential Import Tariff, effective as of June 20 for customs declaration.
All imported parts and accessories of tractors, passenger cars and trucks over 20 tonnes will now be taxed at rate of 15 per cent instead of 5.
Import duty rates for cosmetics, cell phones, some plastic ware and tomato juice are up from the current 30 to 36 per cent, 5 per cent to 8 per cent, 37 to 41 per cent and 35 to 39 per cent, respectively.
Enterprises to enjoy free legal aid
Ministries and provincial-level People’s Committees are obliged to coordinate with the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Viet Nam Union of Co-operatives and enterprise associations in providing legal aid to enterprises of all economic sectors under specifically designed programmes. Meanwhile enterprises are encouraged to study law, appoint capable personnel to manage corporate legal affairs and hire consulting attorneys.
