Cheap tyre tube imports hit local manufacturers

[2008-7-9]

Tag: butyl rubber

LAHORE: Pakistan is perhaps the only country in the world where import prices of finished goods are less than half the global rates of the raw material used in their production and motorcycle tubes are one such item.

The News has found that motorcycle tubes are being imported in millions at $0.55-0.60 per piece while the international rate of butyl rubber (synthetic rubber used in manufacturing motorcycle tubes) needed to produce these tubes is $1.25-1.41 per piece.

It is interesting to note that motorcycle tyres and tube manufacturers have brought this irregularity to the notice of the Federal Board of Revenue but the practice continues.

Leading motorcycle tyre and tube manufacturer Arif Saeed, commenting on the issue, says cheap imports have wiped out local tube manufacturers from after-sales market of motorcycle tubes in Pakistan. He says the local manufacturers had a firm grip over motorcycle tyres, which were purchased by all Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and its after-sales market but sales of motorcycle tubes were restricted to OEMs only.

The irony is that the price of butyl rubber has increased from $2,400 per ton in April 2007 to $7,250 per ton now while the import tariff price (ITP) of motorcycle tubes has risen from $0.50 to $0.55 per piece from China and $0.60 to $0.66 per piece from India, he says.
