Expanded Line of Corrosion-Resistant Shaft Collars from Ruland

Marlborough, Massachusetts, July 2008. Ruland has extended its lineof corrosion-resistant shaft collars to include 316 stainlesssteel, yellow zinc plating, and high-strength grade aluminum withan anodized finish.

Shaft collars in 316 stainless steel are particularly suitable forfood processing, medical and pharmaceutical applications wherewashdown is required and contamination from corrosion must beavoided. A high level of resistance to chloride corrosion makesthese shaft collars ideal for marine applications as well. Rulandexclusively uses screws made from 316 stainless in these collars toensure the full anti-corrosive benefits of this material.

The yellow zinc plated shaft collars also offer good anti-corrosiveproperties yet are less expensive than stainless steelalternatives. All of Ruland's lead-free yellow zinc parts areplated using a RoHS compliant trivalent process instead of thenon-compliant hexavalent process. Zinc plated shaft collars haveless holding power than their black oxide finished carbon steelcounterparts. This is due to the reduced coefficient of frictioncaused by the zinc plating. However, performance of zinc platedparts that utilize plated, high strength alloy steel hardware isstill greater than that of stainless steel parts whose holdingpower suffers from the lower physical properties of stainless steelscrews.

High-strength grade aluminum shaft collars with an anodized finishhave the advantage of being light-weight and having low inertia. They can withstand the recommended screw torque to provide theholding power similar to carbon steel. The aluminum collars aresupplied with steel screws for higher torque and holding power.

All Ruland shaft collars are single point faced to ensureperpendicularity and proper alignment. A precise shaft collar faceto bore relationship ensures that components are both properlypositioned and not tilted on the shaft. Collar faceperpendicularity also ensures even pressure on interfacedcomponents.

The complete line of Ruland shaft collars also includes type 303stainless steel, black oxide carbon steel and engineered plastic. The collars are available in one- and two-piece clamp-style designswith bore sizes from 1/8" to 6" in the inch series and 3mm to 80mmin the metric series.

Shaft collars are part of Ruland's complete product line which alsoincludes rigid couplings with precision honed bores and five typesof zero-backlash motion control couplings: beam couplings, bellowscouplings, oldham couplings, curved jaw couplings and miniaturedisc couplings.
