The Northland is fortunate to have a strong corps of people activein making the area a better place to live.</p><p>Some,such as Anita Gorman, are well-known. Others, such as Jill Jones,have received less public attention.</p><p>Both womenhave been involved in recent activities to enhance theNorthland.</p><p>Gorman has long been one of the mostenthusiastic supporters of Kansas City’s Parks andRecreation Department, which she once served as a parkscommissioner.</p><p>A few weeks ago Gorman helped leadthe effort to raise $60,000 for long-term repairs to the NorthlandFountain.Gorman’s success in this venture should helpensure that the fountain will be well maintained long into thefuture.</p><p>Jones teaches theater at North KansasCity High School, and this year she stepped forward to serve asdirector of “The King and I” atGladstone’s Theatre in the Park.</p><p>Thetheater is one of Gladstone’s most valuable summerassets, bringing together people of all ages to participate indifferent productions.</p><p>This is Jones’first year to direct at the theater, but her enthusiasm for the jobis evident.</p><p>“It’s greatfamily entertainment,” she said of “The Kingand I.” It is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. today andSunday at Oak Grove Park, off 76th Street and NorthTroost.</p><p>While the play is free, donations areencouraged to help make sure the Gladstone Theatre continues toserve Northland audiences for many more years.
