EPA Announces Household Hazardous Waste Curbside Collection forParkersburg, Iowa

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Kansas City, Kan., July 10, 2008) - The U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency is collecting household hazardous waste fromtornado and flood-damaged residences in Parkersburg, Iowa.Residents are encouraged to place damaged household hazardous wasteon their curbside. Proper disposal of these materials will minimizeor prevent long-term environmental damage.
EPA contractors will circulate throughout Parkersburg on a periodicbasis to collect household hazardous waste items.
The following list shows common household items which containpotentially hazardous ingredients that might be found in floodedgarages, basements or other storage space within the home:
Cleaning Products
Oven cleaners
Drain cleaners
Wood and metal cleaners/polishers
Toilet cleaners
Tub, tile, shower cleaners
Bleach
Pool chemicals
Indoor Pesticides
Ant sprays and baits
Cockroach sprays and baits
Flea repellents and shampoos
Bug sprays
Household insecticides
Moth repellents
Mouse and rat poisons and baits
Workshop/Painting Supplies
Adhesives and glues
Furniture strippers
Oil or enamel-based paints
Stains and finishes
Paint thinners and turpentine
Paint strippers and removers
Photographic chemicals
Fixatives and other solvents
Automotive Products
Motor oil
Fuel additives
Carburetor and fuel injection cleaners
Air conditioning refrigerants
Starter fluids
Automotive batteries
Transmission and brake fluid

EPA is also retrieving orphaned hazardous containers such aspropane tanks which were swept away in the flood waters. Anyonefinding or sighting an orphan tank or drum should be aware that itcan be potentially dangerous and should call the Iowa Department ofNatural Resources hotline at

for proper disposal.
