BASF will double its manufacturing capacity for certainalkylethonalamines (AEOA) by mid-2009. This expansion is thecompany's response to increases in its customers' demand for theseproducts. BASF manufactures its range of AEOA specialties at theintegrated Verbund site in Ludwigshafen, Germany, by means of aflexible, fully backward-integrated multi-product facility. AEOA,such as ethylethanolamines, propylethanolamines andbutylethanolamines, are used successfully in a wide array ofapplications, for example in coatings and lubricants, inpharmaceutical and agrochemical products. AEOA belong to thealkylalkanolamine category that BASF now makes at its sites inLudwigshafen, Germany, and Geismar, USA, with a total annualcapacity of 70,000 metric tons.
"As one of the globally leading amine manufacturers, we areexpanding our production capacity in response to our customers'growing demand for specific AEOAs," said Dr. Stefan Blank, head ofthe regional Amines business unit within BASF's Intermediatesdivision. He added: "We are pleased to see that this increase indemand is driven mainly by innovations that we have developed incooperation with our customers." Examples of this are thedevelopment of a new AEOA for high-grade emulsion paints and newoptions to use products from the existing AEOA portfolio, forinstance in certain industrial applications.
The world's most multifaceted amine selection
BASF has the world's most diverse portfolio of amines available tocustomers. In addition to alkyl-, alkanol-, alkoxyalkyl-, di- andpolyamines, the company also produces aromatic as well asheterocyclic amines. In addition it is marketing a constantlyexpanding portfolio of chiral amines of high optical and chemicalpurity. BASF produces amines in Ludwigshafen and Schwarzheide(Germany), Antwerp (Belgium), in Geismar, in Camaçari(Brazil), and in Nanjing, the Verbund site in China.
Amines are being utilized with great success in manufacturingpharmaceuticals and cosmetics as well as cleaning and cropprotection agents. They are also used in producing various plasticsand coating resins. Amines are part of process chemicalformulations applied, for instance, in water treatment as well aspaper, textile and leather manufacturing.
