State looks into safety of adhesive used in modular homes

ACUSHNET — The Massachusetts Department of Public Safety's Board of Building Regulations and Standards has begun an inquiry on design methods and polyurethane adhesives used in modular homes that may have contributed to a fire that quickly destroyed an Acushnet house back in January.

Last Friday, Board of Building Regulations and Standards Chief of Inspections Robert Anderson sent a request to third-party inspection agencies, which inspect modular units at the factories that build them, to find out why a particular flammable adhesive is used to secure sheet rock and whether there are any alternatives.

The letter also asked for an explanation about the open spaces created when upper and lower stories of the modular units are connected.

Answers must be returned by June 30.

"It's a work in progress, at this point," said Department of Public Safety Code Development Manager Thomas Riley. "We're waiting to see what the response is."

Fire Chief Kevin Gallagher began calling on state and national fire investigators within days of the Jan. 13 blaze at 5 Archers Way, which was sparked by a cigarette that ignited the front porch and spread through the house. Though homeowners Roland and Stacey Oliveira, their two children and their children's two friends, who had spent the night, escaped safely, the home was completely engulfed in flames between the time a 911 call came in at 6:34 a.m. and when firefighters began arriving a few minutes later.
