Salem celebrates the 10th Anniversary of Paint the Town

The 10th anniversary will be kicked off First Wednesday in Salem,as some artists get a birds-eye view of Salem from the vacantseventh floor of the Capitol Center building and others take todowntown streets.
The final event will be Aug. 15 at the Capitol Building andgrounds.
Hosted by Artists in Action, "Paint the Town" gives area paintersthe opportunity to come out of their studios and create art "enplein air."
The public has the opportunity to observe, ask questions and enjoythe scenic locations, which this year include Brunk House on theSalem-Dallas Highway, Bush's Pasture Park (during the Salem ArtFair & Festival), Historic Deepwood Estate, the Baskett SloughNational Wildlife Refuge and Bethel Heights Vineyard.
Other sites are the Capitol Building and grounds, Daffodil Hill,Cinnamon Lake Apartments and Havenhill Lavender Farm nearSilverton.
Artists pay a one-time participation fee of $20 and can participatein any or all scheduled events. They are asked to check in with thesite coordinator.
The fee covers operating costs and application to the final "PleinAir Show" at Salem's Elsinore Framing & Fine Art Gallery in SalemOct. 1-31. The show is juried, and cash prizes will be awarded.
Local artists Eileen Cotter Howell and Sue-Del McCulloch will jurythis year's show.
Some artists complete their work on-site that day; other artworksare completed later in the artists' studios from studies orsketches developed on-site.
First Wednesday will feature Cynthia Herron and Marilyn Krug andother Artists in Action members giving a free landscape paintingdemonstration at the historic Capitol Center building.
Artists can camp out at any First Wednesday site.
Harp music by Eugene musician Shawndeya will be featured at 7 p.m.during the 5 to 8 p.m. event in the Capitol Center.
Complimentary refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be featured.
Other sites are chosen for their garden settings and panoramicviews, including Havenhill Lavender Farm and Daffodil Hill.
Others, such as Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, are chosenfor their wild and natural settings.
The mission of "Paint the Town" is to raise awareness of the artsand artists in the Salem area, to present opportunities to seeartists creating and provide an organized event where artists canpaint outdoors and exhibit their works later on.
